"All Pumpkins are Carved/Shaved with Woodcarving tools not painted. The black and grays are created from sharpies and pumpkin white space.

My friends and I started a Pumpkin Carving contest in my home town which has since branched out and was held at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket Mass last year.

Here are some of the Pumpkins I did for my personal home display."

“Another pumpkin carving season passes. For the first time I entered a contest. The Blizzard pumpkin contest is impossible… I didn’t even place in the top five. It’s going to take a while to recover from this one… I know it isn’t perfect, but I was hopeful. I guess I’ll have to step it up a lot for next year.”

Lecture: How art, design inform creative leaders

John Maeda, President of the Rhode Island School of Design, delivers a funny and charming talk that spans a lifetime of work in art, design and technology, concluding with a picture of creative leadership in the future. Watch for demos of Maeda’s earliest work -- and even a computer made of people.

Sweets: Majora’s Mask Cake

"This is a cake I've been wanting to do forever but only recently had time to do it. If you don't recognise it immediately, this is Majora's Mask from the game of the same namesake.

This was definitely a bit of a challenge. By far, the hardest part of the cake to achieve was symmetry. Using a floppy, sticky substance that dries quickly in the air, stretches when lifted and cracks if manipulated too long means you need to work fast. Fast and accuracy aren't best friends. My sister scoffed as I complained about the imperfections. But you gotta strive for perfect, right?

Well, it isn't perfect. But overall, I'm uncharacteristically pleased by the final result. The last few cakes I've done I've started to feel like I'm the boss of the fondant, rather than it controlling me. We understand each other now and so it's not this stressful battle of wills. The result is an ability to create things I wouldn't have dreamed of doing a year ago. There's lots here that could be improved, of course. But it's a work in progress and I, finally, am able to see progression."

Hack: Myst Book

A Real Myst Book by Mike Ando

It took six years and most certainly some form of arcane ritual for Mike Ando to create a real-life Myst book… that you can open and play! Inside the book is a fully functional desktop computer with an embedded touch screen which you can use to play all of the pre-loaded Myst games. Check out full details at Ando’s website.

Video: Halloween Light Shows

Halloween Gangnam Style! Over 8,500 lights and roughly 250 channels of computer animation.

Special thanks to Kevin Judd for the inspiration. This is a hobby and the display has been in the making for about year. The Gangnam Style video was a last minute addition made possible by a LightOrama forum member, Torqumada286, who graciously shared the lead singer's mouth/vocal programming sequence with me. I tweaked it some, added the back up singers, and sequenced the rest of the house and yard props myself.

Lecture: Retouching and Photography

As a professional photo retoucher, Amy Dresser’s attitude is not to make an image perfect; but keep the character and remove what might be distracting. According to Dresser, photo retouchers are parasites in the photo industry – without photographers, people like her wouldn’t exist. Yet retouching has never been more prevalent, and we increasingly blur the line between photography and illustration. As a professional photo retoucher, Amy’s attitude is not to make any image perfect; keep the character, but remove what might be distracting.

Hack: Pumpktris

What do you get when you combine a pumpkin with the classic video game Tetris? Pumpktris! Fully playable, embedded in a pumpkin, and with the stem serving as a controller.
"One of my habits is to write down all the crazy, fleeting ideas I have, then go back to review later rather than judging right off the bat, or even worse, forgetting them.  Earlier in the month I was looking through that idea notepad and found “Make Tetris Pumpkins” from sometime last year. My original plan had been to make forms to shape pumpkins into Tetris pieces as they grew, then stack them together for Halloween. Since Halloween was only a few weeks away and it was too late to start growing pumpkins, I thought “Why not make a pumpkin you can play Tetris on instead?"

Sculpture: Engraved Self-Portrait

Engraved Self-Portrait by Angela Palmer

Oxford-based sculptor Angela Palmer captures beautifully detailed three-dimensional views of medical CT and MRI scans in glass. Just as magnetic fields are used to carefully image layer after layer of internal anatomy, Palmer uses vertically layered glass to etch her own topology. She says her inspiration for these works is a lifelong fascination with maps and visual topographies.

Sweets: XKCD Webcomic Wedding Cake

XKCD Webcomic Wedding Cake by New Jersey’s Pink Cake Box

The top of the cake includes cutouts of the comic characters with a red heart on a wire between them. The entire cake is covered in white fondant with black thin bands at the base of each tier. The equations decorating the remaining tiers are inspired from xkcd’s Useless. The cake is made up of some unusual flavors including banana cake with coffee & chocolate mousse and vanilla with raspberry & strawberry mousse.

Short Film: The Bloody Cuts

Bloody Cuts is a series of 3-10 minute no-budget horror films forming an anthology of 13 which will be released online at www.bloodycuts.co.uk, over a number of months running until their terrifying cycle is complete.

The first of 13 'Bloody Cuts' makes its entry wound with the release of 'Lock Up' - the debut from an anthology of chilling shorts spilt from the vein of horror fanaticism.

When you're leaving late from work, like you've done many times before; spare a thought for the complacency of your safety and stay out of the dark - evil lives there. Lock Up is a chilling tale of fear and suspense and a potent reminder that something of nightmares could be lurking in the shadows around any corner.

Papercraft: Collages Comics

Every since Photoshop turned collaging into a popular pastime, it has become rare to stumble across an actual paper and glue collage, but Mike Alcantara's comic book tributes are made from nothing but comics--no paint, no markers, just the ink already printed on paper. You can check out his latest pieces on Facebook or buy one for yourself on Etsy.

OpEd: Is CSS and Website Design a Fashion Statement?

"If you've never seen a website, you are a liar! (You're on one right now.) Consciously or not, the first thing you notice when you visit a website is how the site LOOKS, which is controlled by the CSS Stylesheet. CSS is the fashion of the web- it makes sites pretty (or very very ugly). And as our lives migrate more and more onto the world wide web, our presence online becomes a central way to define and express ourselves. So before you lay out your outfit for tomorrow, take a look at your website and make sure you match!"
